King, the old man – Preaching

Preaching Outline on Exodus 1:7-8. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased greatly, and multiplied, and were strengthened exceedingly; so that the land was filled with them. And there arose a new king over Egypt, who had not known Joseph;

Introduction to Exodus 1:7-8

The Word says that the children of Israel settled in Egypt during the time when Joseph was governor. They grew and multiplied. There was a pharaoh, but it was Joseph who looked after the children of Israel. In practice, Pharaoh had no influence over the children of Israel, because they had Joseph.

Time passed, Joseph died and there came a time when a new king arose and took over in Egypt. This king didn’t know Joseph, and as he didn’t want to lose his rule, he made the children of Israel slaves.

Development

There is a church that has established itself in this world with the rule of the Lord Jesus over its life. A people who have grown and multiplied in the knowledge of God.

But time has passed, and today we see a gospel that no longer has the rule of the Lord Jesus; a new king has arisen in the midst of the gospel.

Many believers at the beginning of their journey lived under Jesus’ rule, but over time they grew old and have now left Jesus’ rule. A new king has arisen, who can be typified by reason, by self-indulgence, by the interests of this life. The new king is the old man.

Joseph died

The whole point of origin lies in Joseph’s death. If our relationship with God dies, a new king arises. If our commitment to God dies, a new king arises.

Joseph died, he was mortal. But our relationship and commitment to Jesus cannot die, we cannot let a new king, new values, a new sense of living arise.

A new king who didn’t know Joseph

All our obligations and commitments in this life are not above the Lord. Our friends and family need to know that we have a God who rules our lives.

But sometimes commitments, relationships, people arise that we don’t present to the Lord. Things that arise with the intention of ruling, and who don’t know that we are Jesus’, that he is the one who governs our walk, our decisions.

These are things that come into the life of the believer because Jesus no longer governs their life. Life is now governed by other things, people, relationships or situations. A new king has arisen.

The believer stops growing, stops bearing fruit spiritually. They become slaves to the things of this life. Slaves to relationships, to commitments of this life. He lets the things of this life rule his life.

What part of your life still doesn’t know Jesus? Is it your commitments? Your friends? Your family? Your leisure time? Any personal plans?

Conclusion of Exodus1:7-8

Jesus’ rule cannot cease to exist in our lives. If any commitment or value arises, you need to know that Jesus is above all, that we have an owner, that he has made us grow and multiply.

May everything in your life know and know that you have a God, that this God is alive in your life and rules it.
