Apocalipse versiculo por versiculo

The strongholds of trials

Preaching Outline on 1 Samuel 23:14 – “And David abode in the wilderness, in the strongholds, and was in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph: and Saul sought him daily, but God delivered him not into his hand.”

Introduction to I Samuel 23:14

Imagine the scene: David is alone in the desert, surrounded by enemies, being pursued relentlessly by Saul. He has nowhere to run, no safe city or visible fortress. The only certainty he has is that God is with him. But even so, the psalmist finds refuge – not in stone walls, but in spiritual “strongholds”.

How many times have we also felt like David? Lost in emotional, financial or spiritual deserts, desperately looking for a safe place, a way out, a solution. Life’s trials seem to suffocate us, and all we want is to find a safe haven. But God has something special in store for us in these difficult times: places of strength.

Development

The Desert of Trials – A place of refinement

The desert is an arid, lonely place full of challenges. For David, the desert represented a period of intense trial. He was hunted by Saul, lived under constant threat and had no material security. However, it was precisely in this difficult setting that God revealed His strong places to David.

What is the desert in our lives?

For us, the desert can be any situation of adversity: illness, financial crises, broken relationships, irreparable losses or even spiritual doubts. It’s a time when we feel we’re being tested to the extreme.

Zife: The deeper meaning

The name Ziph, mentioned in the text, comes from a Hebrew word meaning to refine, mold or hone. God uses the desert to polish us, to remove impurities from our souls and prepare us for something greater. Just as gold is purified by fire, we are refined by trials.

But here’s the consolation: even in the desert, God gives us strongholds. These places are divine strategies to protect and strengthen us as we face life’s battles.

Strongholds in Trials – Spiritual refuges

David’s strongholds were not physical buildings, but spiritual refuges. They represented his total dependence on God. In the same way, God offers us strongholds during our trials.

  • Prayer – Our first refuge
When we are in the desert, prayer becomes our first stronghold. It is the direct channel of communication with God, where we can pour out our anguish, seek guidance and find peace. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded that prayer brings the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.
  • Fasting – a powerful weapon
Fasting is another powerful place. When we fast, we declare our absolute dependence on God and recognize that only He can supply our needs. Jesus himself went through the desert and overcame the enemy through fasting and the Word (Matthew 4:1-11).
  • Early mornings – A time of intimacy with God
There’s something special about the early hours of the morning. When the world is still silent, we find a sacred space to be in God’s presence. It is in these moments that He strengthens us, renews our strength and shows us the way forward. Have you ever sought God at dawn? While many sleep, we are praying at the Lord’s feet!
  • The word of God – An unshakable fortress
The Bible is a stronghold because it is God’s unchanging truth. When we are in the desert, we need to anchor our souls in the Word. Psalm 119:105 says: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s word is our strong food!

Why are we in the desert? – God’s purpose

We often wonder why we are facing so many difficulties. It seems unfair, painful and pointless. But God has a clear purpose for every desert we go through.

  • Spiritual Refinement
Just as the name Zife suggests, God uses the desert to shape and refine us. He removes the bad in us and teaches us to depend on him more. James 1:2-4 encourages us to see trials as opportunities to grow in faith and patience.
  • Preparing for the future
God was preparing David to be king. Each day in the desert was a lesson in humility, trust and leadership. In the same way, He is preparing us for something greater. You may not see it now, but God is enabling you to fulfill His purpose in your life.
  • Protection from the enemy
In the desert, David discovered that strongholds were God’s strategy to keep him safe. For us, these strongholds are spiritual weapons against the enemy. Ephesians 6:10-18 reminds us that we must put on the armor of God to resist the onslaughts of the evil one.

Conclusion 1 Samuel 23:14

Are you in a desert today? Don’t be discouraged! God has allowed this trial because he wants to take you to the strong places. These places are not temporary escapes, but spiritual refuges where you will find strength, peace and direction.

It is in the desert that we learn to pray more fervently, to fast with more surrender, to seek God’s presence in the early hours of the morning and to immerse ourselves deeply in His Word. It is there that we are shaped, refined and prepared for the call He has for us.

Even in the desert, the Lord promises to keep you in the strongholds. Trust in Him, seek Him with all your heart and allow Him to do the complete work in your life.

“The Lord is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2)
