Preaching on Mephibosheth – Preaching
Preaching Outline 2 Samuel 9:3-7 – And the king said, “Is there not yet one of the house of Saul, that I may show him the favor of God? Then Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan, crippled in both feet.
And the king said to him, “Where is he? And Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-Debar.
So David the king sent and took him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel in Lo-Debar. And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, and fell on his face, and bowed himself; and David said, Mephibosheth! And he said, “Here is your servant. And David said to him, “Do not be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and I will restore to you all the lands of Saul your father, and you shall eat bread at my table for ever.
Introduction to 2 Samuel 9:3-7
The custom of kings who took the throne was to destroy all the descendants of the former king. Then the new king would search the whole kingdom for the deposed king’s sons to kill.
Development
David did something completely different: he sent to search his kingdom to see if there were any of Saul’s sons left to show him kindness.
He discovered that there was a man called Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, and he called him to live near him and sit at his table every day, forever.
Mephibosheth lived in a place called “Lo-Debar” and David sent for him. The name Lo-Debar means *”no pasture”*. The name Mephibosheth means *”dear one”*.
The Holy Spirit of the Lord seeks out the man to whom the Lord wants to show kindness.
He finds man in a very difficult place, a field without pasture, without food for the soul. Lo-Debar is the portrait of the world.
Ziba led him into David’s presence
That’s what the Holy Spirit does: he knows where the man in need is and goes to him to lead him into God’s presence.
Seeing him prostrate before his throne, David exclaimed: Mephibosheth!
The king’s word to the man brought before him is:
Don’t be afraid to be in my presence – The Blood of Jesus gives you access to the Father;
I will restore your father’s land – the land Adam lost by sinning – Eternity;
You will eat bread at my table forever – This is what the Lord has prepared in his Eternity for his loved ones.
