Introduction to Genesis 1:2-3
Chaos Before Creation
Just as the earth was formless, empty and shrouded in darkness, the heart of man without God is:
- Deformed by sin,
- Empty of eternal meaning,
- Dominated by spiritual darkness.
But just as the Holy Spirit acted in the beginning, bringing order and life, He also acts in us – transforming chaos into beauty, emptiness into fullness and darkness into light!
I. The Condition of the Heart without God
1.”Shapeless” – Deformed by Sin
- Sin distorts the image of God in us (Romans 3:23).
- Like clay in the potter’s hands (Jeremiah 18:4), the Holy Spirit remodels us, restoring in us the likeness of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18).
2.”Empty” – Without Eternal Purpose
- The world offers passing pleasures, but only the Holy Spirit fills with

3. “Darkness and Abyss” – Separated from God
- Sin has created a chasm between us and the Father (Isaiah 59:2).

II. The Action of the Holy Spirit in Us
1. He “Hovered Over the Waters” – Bringing Life to Chaos
- Just as in the beginning, the Holy Spirit works within us, bringing

2. He commands: “Let there be light” – Revealing Christ
- Jesus is the Light of the world (John 8:12), and the Holy Spirit reveals him in us.
- We are no longer lost in darkness – we now walk in the light (1 John 1:7).
3. He Sustains Us – Preventing the Fall into the Abyss
- The Holy Spirit watches over us (Ephesians 1:13-14),
- He intercedes for us (Romans 8:26),
- He guarantees our victory (1 John 4:4).

Just as God transformed chaos into creation, the Holy Spirit transforms sinners into children of God!
