By the Well – Preaching

Preaching Outline on Genesis 24:16 – “And the maiden was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known: and she went down to the spring, and filled her pitcher, and came up.”

Rebeca, faithful church guy

Introduction to Genesis 24:16

In biblical culture, wells were sources of life, symbols of provision and blessing. They were places of encounter, work and, as we will see in Rebekah’s story, divine encounters that changed the course of history.

Development

  • The Well: A place of provision and encounter: The wells represented the search for something precious and essential: water, the source of life. Just as Abraham and Isaac dug wells and prospered, the Church, like Rebekah, must constantly seek the source of life, which is Christ. At the well, we find refreshment, sustenance and the presence of God.
  • Rebekah: A type of the faithful church: Rebekah was beautiful, hard-working, a dedicated servant. Her going to the well was not just a routine task, but an act of faith and obedience. She represents the Church that seeks God daily in prayer, in reading the Word and in fellowship with the brethren.
  • Eliezer and the Holy Spirit: Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, was sent on a special mission: to find a wife for Isaac. He typifies the Holy Spirit, who guides the Church in seeking God’s will and leads her to meet Christ, the Bridegroom.
  • Eliezer’s prayer: Eliezer’s prayer reveals the importance of seeking divine direction in all areas of life, especially in choosing a spouse and serving God. The Church, like Eliezer, must cry out for a “good encounter” with the Lord, aligning its desires with the Father’s will.
  • Rebekah: Attentive to God’s voice: Rebekah was attentive to Eliezer’s voice, ready to serve him with generosity and diligence. The faithful Church, likewise, must be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, ready to obey and serve with love and dedication.
  • Work and reward: Rebekah didn’t just give Eliezer water, she extended her generosity to the camels, showing a willingness to work hard. The Church is called to serve with joy and selflessness, knowing that the Lord rewards faithfulness with spiritual and eternal blessings.
  • Decision and commitment: When asked if she would go with Eliezer, Rebekah replied firmly: “I will!”. This decision reflects the Church’s commitment to follow Christ without hesitation, responding to the call with courage and determination.

Conclusion of Genesis 24:16

The story of Rebekah at the well teaches us to seek God diligently, to serve with love and generosity, and to respond to God’s call promptly and faithfully. May we, as a Church, be found “at the well”, being channels of blessing and refreshment for the world thirsting for the water of life.

“And before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew water; and I said to her: Give me a drink. (Genesis 24: 45).

“And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: and I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.” (Genesis 24: 46).
