Will you go with this man? – Preaching
Preaching Outline on Genesis 24:58 – “And they called Rebekah and said to her: Will you go with this man? She answered, I will.”
Introduction to Genesis 24:58
Chapter 24 of Genesis deals with the moment when Abraham, already of age, was concerned about the continuity of his offspring, and consequently the continuity of the Lord’s blessing on his household. He called his servant and made him swear that on his journey he would bring a wife from within his family to marry his son Isaac.
Abraham was worried that his son wouldn’t go to Mesopotamia, towards the city of Nahor, where he had lived: “Be careful!” said Abraham, “Don’t let my son go back there. At the same time, your servant was worried that if he found a wife for Isaac, she wouldn’t want to go.
So Abraham said to him, “The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from my homeland and who promised me on oath that he would give this land to my descendants, will send his angel ahead of you to bring a wife for my son from there. If the woman doesn’t want to come, you will be released from the oath. But don’t take my son back there.”
Beloved, we want to emphasize that when God is in charge of our will, he fulfills our heart’s desire and confirms all things. Abraham demonstrated total dependence on God and passed this on to his servant, who immediately took the oath and set off on his journey.
In our walk of faith, it is very important to depend on God. Just as Abraham’s servant made a commitment with an oath to go in search of a wife for Isaac, we too as God’s servants have a commitment to walk in his presence because of his great love for our lives, giving us Salvation in Christ.
Development
We can see that throughout Abraham’s servant’s journey, in order to succeed, he needed to trust in God, even in the face of difficulties. So he prayed: “Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me good success this day and be gracious to my master Abraham.
Prayer is the great mystery in the life of the Lord’s servant. Abraham’s servant knew this, because he certainly saw this attitude in Abraham’s life and so took on the same attitude. And we as servants must constantly keep praying, so that difficulties will fall away and doors will be opened.
On this journey we need many blessings, in our homes, at work, in our health and so many other things. We need to remain steadfast on our journey, certain that God has been watching over us, and under his word we will have victory.
God’s confirmation
Receiving confirmation from God is something extraordinary, because it’s confirmation of prayer, it’s victory.
God did as Abraham’s servant wished: “Grant that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please tip your pitcher and give me a drink,’ and she replies, ‘Drink. I will also give water to your camels,’ let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. Then I will know that you have been kind to my master.
The gratitude of Abraham’s servant
Everything with God has a perfect fit, even if it’s impossible in our eyes, in the end our God confirms his entire plan.
Just as Abraham’s servant prayed, God did. Imagine the servant’s joy at having his prayer answered down to the smallest detail. We serve the God of details. Hallelujah!
After observing how the woman watered the camels and all her poise and beauty, Abraham’s servant asked about her house and relatives, as well as whether there was room in her house for her men and camels to spend the night, after having given her valuable gifts.
There was nothing else for Abraham’s servant to do after so many confirmations. He worshipped the Lord God Almighty.
Then the man bowed down in worship to the Lord, saying, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withdrawn his goodness and his faithfulness from my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.
Rebekah’s decision
Abraham’s servant introduced himself to Rebekah’s brother, Laban, who immediately invited him to join his men and camels. However, Abraham’s servant didn’t want to eat before telling him the whole purpose of being there. After telling him all about his journey and purpose, it was now up to Rebekah to decide whether or not to accept the invitation.
Her decision would change her life and that of her family, and she had no idea that her decision would also change the trajectory of an entire nation.
Laban and Bethuel answered, “This comes from the Lord; we can say nothing to him, either for or against.
Then they said to her: “Let’s call the young woman and see what she says”. This was now the big moment, Rebekah’s answer.
Conclusion of Genesis 24:58
We have been called to live a journey of great experiences with God. The right decision will always be the one where the Lord confirms his will with obvious signs.
Rebeca didn’t think twice about giving her answer:
They called Rebekah and asked her, “Do you want to go with this man?”
“Yes, I do,” she replied.
Today, you and I and many others have been reached by God’s plan, and the choice you made that day was very important for this blessing in our lives.
May we always trust and depend on God throughout our life journey, certain that he will always send his angel to give us a good journey and return with rich blessings in store for us and our entire household.
