Preaching Outline on Genesis 47:15-17 – “Now when the money ran out in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, saying: Give us bread, why do we die in your presence? Because money is lacking.

Introduction to Genesis 47:15-17

Genesis 47:15-17 – …Give us bread, why do we die in your presence?

The famine faced by Egypt and all the surrounding lands at that time spoke prophetically of the situation of the world in these last days. At that time all resources had been exhausted, and there was a shortage of food and famine in all lands. Only Joseph had bread. Everyone who wanted to stay alive had to go to Joseph in Egypt, because only he had bread.

Development

Despite all the scientific and technological development that the world has achieved, despite all the culture and science, man today has a deep inner hunger. This hunger is not physical, but spiritual; it is a hunger of the soul, a hunger to hear the Word of God, as Amos prophesied, saying: “Behold, the days come, says the Lord God, that I will send a famine on the earth; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord” – Amos 8:11.

At that time, Egypt was the most developed and cultured country among the existing nations, but when famine struck, Egypt’s resources were not enough to solve the situation. It was on this occasion that God raised up Joseph to save the Egyptians and all the surrounding peoples from certain death by famine, and he was given the title of Zaphenath-Panea, which means “Savior of the World”.

Joseph is the type of the Lord Jesus. Jesus came into the world (Egypt) and gave his life on the cross for us. He is the bread that was given for us so that we could have eternal life, so that we wouldn’t die of hunger in this world.

The world and religion don’t have the resources or the food to satisfy man’s spiritual hunger. Only Jesus can feed the hungry soul and supply all its needs, because he is the “Bread of Life”, the Living Bread that came down from heaven to give life to the world.

Conclusion of Genesis 47:15-17

Only Joseph had bread in Egypt. Only Jesus has the spiritual food to save man and prevent him from dying in this world. He himself is the food, he is the Bread of Life.

When man discovers that Jesus has what his soul needs, he must leave where he is and seek out the Lord, humbly asking him to help him. From then on, the Lord will be the reason for his life, the Bread for his spiritual life, which will be sustained through communion with his Body, that is, with his Church. The Bread is broken in the body and distributed to all, so that all may have life.
