Bread, Meat and Wine – Preaching

Preaching Outline on I Chronicles 16:3 – “And he distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, and a good piece of meat, and a flask of wine.”

Introduction to I Chronicles 16:3

Chapter 16 of I Chronicles is the moment when King David brought the ark of God into the tent he had set up. There was a time when the Ark of the Covenant was not in the midst of the people and this caused great distress for the people, it was the feeling that God’s presence was no longer in the midst of the people.

But now God was giving them the opportunity to restore it, and to bring communion and joy back to the people. We can draw a parallel between this historical event and the project of Salvation that the Lord Jesus has granted to everyone who believes in him.

Development

Just as David desired and fought for the ark to return to the people, the Lord Jesus desires man to have communion with the Father and embrace his project of Salvation.
When the ark of the covenant was brought back to Israel, there was great joy because of the spiritual renewal it represented.

David’s joy is the joy of one who loves the plan of his God.
The presence of the ark in the midst of the people represented God’s covenant with man renewed; the sure guidance of the Holy Spirit; the glory of Israel re-established.

David brought the ark to man – Jesus brought the work of the Father to man. Verse 3 speaks of the blessing that has come upon us: All Israel: The blessing is for everyone.

And he gave it to everyone:

Bread, meat and a bottle of wine.

Our God always has the best to offer us, Jesus’ sacrifice is God’s greatest gift to man, and when man accepts it he receives all sorts of blessings.

1 O all you who are thirsty, come to the waters, and you who have no money, come, buy and eat; yes, come and buy wine and milk without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend your money on that which is not bread, and the fruit of your labor on that which cannot satisfy? listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight in the fat.
3 Incline your ear and come to me; listen, and your soul will live; for I will make an everlasting covenant with you, giving you the steadfast benefits promised to David.
Isaiah 55:1-3

He placed Levites before the ark of the Lord to praise and celebrate God

For those who accepted the project of Salvation in their lives, they also received the opportunity to come into God’s presence in the name of Jesus to offer their gratitude and praise. The people there rejoiced and gave praise to God with the priests. Today we have also celebrated our Salvation in Christ!

Conclusion

The book of Chronicles highlights God’s sovereign deliverance and the fulfillment of his promises. God has been faithful at all times, he has given us the opportunity to always have him by our side in an everlasting covenant through the sacrifice of Jesus, his son.
