Faith – Preaching
Preaching Outline on Joshua 14:11 – “I am as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me; what was my strength then, such is my strength now, both for war and for going out and coming in.”
Introduction to Joshua 14:11
The people of Israel had come out of Egypt under various signs and miracles worked by God. There were the deliverances from the ten plagues, the passage through the middle of the sea, the defeat of Pharaoh’s army, all witnessed by more than six hundred thousand men (Ex. 12:37), including Caleb.
When they were in the desert and felt thirsty, God provided water, when they felt hot, God provided the cloud, when they felt hungry, God provided the manna, cold, God provided the pillar of fire to warm and illuminate. However, many of the people became discouraged, missed Egypt, murmured against the Lord and, above all, forgot the great promise: to inherit Canaan. And so they died in the desert (because they lost their strength).
Development
One day we were rescued from the world (Egypt). The Lord worked great signs for us to be here, never letting us lack water (refreshment from the Holy Spirit), manna (revealed food), cloud (comfort to endure the test – Sun), pillar of fire (direction). And he gave us a great promise: Eternity.
In the words read, we see the testimony of a servant who had suffered the same trials as everyone else. It was 40 years in the desert. How many struggles, difficult times he had gone through, but his faith and his testimony were never altered (Num. 13:30), he always had a word of encouragement for his brothers.
Caleb’s whole secret lay in his faith in possessing the inheritance he had been promised. The word says that faith is the firm foundation of things hoped for and the proof of things not seen. He may not have seen Canaan, but he was firm in the hope of possessing it, because the one who had promised it to him was the same one who had delivered him from slavery, and this renewed his strength in the desert (“I am as strong as I was on the day Moses sent me”). For the church today, the firm foundation (faith) is Jesus, who gives us support to overcome the world and hope to reach eternity.
Conclusion of Joshua 14:11
The inheritance is for those who persevere in the faith of following the Lord (verse 9). Even though there will be times of struggle in the desert, when there is the certainty of eternity (faith to reach Canaan), there will be strength in our hearts to carry on. Of the more than 600,000 who left Egypt, only two set foot on the soil of Canaan, one of whom was Caleb, because at no time was his faith shaken by the events in the desert. He was kept alive.
OBJECTIVE
Whoever has faith as their foundation (Jesus – the rock) overcomes the desert (world) and reaches Canaan (eternity). Faith does not grow old (“I am as strong as the day Moses sent me”).
