The priest – Preaching
Preaching Outline on Exodus 19:5-6 – “…you shall be my peculiar possession… …and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests.”
The Levitical priesthood
In the Old Testament, the priest was a man belonging to the tribe of Levi, who ministered in the tabernacle, sacrificing to God for the people, and later in the temple built first by Solomon.
The priesthood was called Levitical because the Lord chose the family of Aaron and his descendants to look after the things of the Lord (Numbers 1:50).
The priest had a peculiar characteristic: he had compassion for the sinner.
The people of Israel were unforgiving when someone broke the law, but when the sinner repented and brought an animal to be sacrificed to the Lord, asking for forgiveness, the priest was filled with compassion for him and interceded to God and the Lord forgave him.
This was the action of the Holy Spirit on him, making him feel this and mediating between God and man.
The Lord said that Israel would be a priestly kingdom, because it was chosen from all the nations of the earth, it received all the best and good, with the aim of being a way for man to have an experience with God. This was the promise made to Abram in Genesis 12:3.
Conclusion of Exodus 19:5-6
While Israel was in the position, many received the blessing.
We’ve talked about this on other occasions: Israel was the fig tree planted by the side of the road so that its fruit would bring other peoples to the Lord.
Israel didn’t understand and lost this peculiarity. When the Lord Jesus was exercising his ministry, he said that Israel was a fruitless fig tree and would therefore be cut down (Luke 13:7).
The priesthood, with the new covenant, has become independent – that is, everyone can come to God without the need for an intermediary, only you and Christ are enough to come to God.
This is one of the foundations of the Religious Reformation: the universal priesthood of the believer. Being able to seek God anywhere, without the need for any intermediary other than Christ.
