Who is like you – Deuteronomy 33:29

Who is like you, people saved by the Lord?

Preaching Outline on Deuteronomy 33:29“Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you? A people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, and the sword of your majesty; therefore your enemies shall be subject to you, and you shall tread on their high places.”

Introduction to Deuteronomy 33:29

The text we have just read contains the last words of Moses, the great leader of Israel, who led the people on their long journey through the desert. Moses saw and experienced many signs and wonders worked by God. At the end of his life, in a moment of farewell, he expresses a profound truth: Israel was a blessed people, because they had a wonderful God, who always took care of them with love, power and faithfulness.

This truth also applies to us, the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are the people saved by the Lord, the God who has not changed and continues to do great things in our midst. So today we will reflect on the incomparable privilege of being the Lord’s saved people.

Development

A PEOPLE SAVED BY THE LORD

Moses declares: “Who is like you, O Israel? A people saved by the Lord!” Just as God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt, he has also delivered us from spiritual slavery, sin and eternal death. He has opened our eyes to see his great plan of salvation.

We don’t miss “Egypt” – the world and its illusions – because we have experienced the freedom that is in Christ Jesus. We have been ransomed at the price of blood and so we can declare with conviction that we are a blessed people.

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

THE SHIELD OF YOUR HELP

Moses calls the Lord “the shield of your help”. This expression points to divine protection. How many deliverances the Lord has given his people! How many times, even though we don’t deserve it, we have been saved by His mighty hands.

He is our shield in the midst of life’s storms. His faithfulness is our security, and his grace sustains us daily. When we face dangers or difficulties, we can fully trust in the Lord, because he never abandons us.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and my bulwark, my Savior.” (2 Samuel 22:2-3)

THE SWORD OF YOUR MAJESTY

Moses also highlights the “sword of your majesty”. Here, we are reminded of the power of God’s Word. It is our spiritual weapon, effective in facing life’s battles.

The Word of the Lord is living and powerful. His promises are unshakeable, and in them we find strength and direction. The Lord Jesus has made us kings and priests unto God, and as such, we must live in obedience to His Word, proclaiming the Gospel and contending for the faith.

“For the word of God is living and effective, and sharper than any two-edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12)

ENEMIES WILL BE SUBJECT TO YOU

Moses declared that the enemies of God’s people would be subject to him. This reminds us that although we face afflictions, persecution and evil spiritual powers, in Christ we are more than conquerors.

Situations that seem impossible in our eyes become opportunities for God to manifest his power. Often, what seemed like defeat turns into victory.

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)

YOU WILL TREAD ON ITS HEIGHTS

The promise of “treading on his high places” points to a glorious destiny. The Lord is preparing for us a place of victory and eternal reward. Not only will we overcome the challenges of this life, but we will also reach the ultimate prize: the crown of righteousness, reserved for those who persevere in faith.

The apostle Paul says:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. From now on, the crown of righteousness is laid up for me.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

Soon, we will see the Lord face to face and dwell with him in a place that surpasses all human understanding.

Conclusion of Deuteronomy 33:29

“Who is like you, O Israel?” This question resonates in our hearts today. Who is like God’s people? There is no people in the world so happy, so privileged and so loved by the Lord.

We don’t deserve it, but by grace we have been chosen, set free and transformed. We are the people saved by the Lord, and to him we give all the glory. May we never lose sight of how blessed we are.

“Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord.” (Psalms 144:15)

Let’s glorify the Lord for His love and faithfulness!
