Fell from the Grace of God – Preaching

Preaching Outline on Acts 20:9-12 – A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, fell sound asleep during Paul’s long speech. Overcome by sleep, he fell from the third floor. When he was picked up, he was dead. Paul went down, leaned over the boy and embraced him, saying, “Don’t be alarmed! He’s alive!”

Introduction to Acts 20:9-12

The book of Acts of the Apostles recounts great experiences lived by the early Church, many lives were reached and set free, the signs of God’s work within the Church were evident, and day after day the Lord’s grace transformed lives.

The text read shows a great miracle in the life of a young man and, at the same time, a great experience for the whole Church present. We can draw a parallel with regard to the spiritual, using the facts of the text with our days. Let’s see!

Development

Eutychus: Fell from the third floor

The Word tells us that the reason for Eutychus’ fall was that he fell asleep, causing him to fall out of the window he was in. We live in days when many are in a spiritual slumber, speaking of those within the Church, causing many to fall from God’s grace.

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is ready, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

…during Paul’s long speech

This was one of the triggers for making Eutychus sleepy. Bringing it into the spiritual context of our day, we can see that many have become bored in their walk. When the spiritual life is not going very well, the things of God in the servant’s life tend to become boring or lose interest.

We need to be vigilant on our journey of faith. Prayer and reading the Word strengthen us and vaccinate us against spiritual illnesses.

Let him therefore who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. I Corinthians 10:12

…and was raised up dead.

We can imagine the sadness in the hearts of the brothers there, death always causes great sadness and loss. Paul’s speech soon stopped, and a great uproar took over the place!

Unfortunately, many people have died spiritually and fallen into the hands of the adversary, and this causes great damage to the Church and to a family of God’s servants. Spiritual death doesn’t just happen, it is accompanied by signs of misconduct in the walk with God. Watch out!

Do not be troubled, for his soul is in him.

We can see Paul’s care and his quick action in the face of what had happened. This is how a leader in the congregation should act, the sheep must be cared for and their salvation preserved. Today we see many leaders only concerned with numbers, while many are dying spiritually.

The apostle Paul used all the resources he had to help that young man, but Paul didn’t have his own life to give back to the young man. God’s intervention was needed in that cause, when we are at the Lord’s feet he always hears our prayer, Paul there was the instrument used by God to bring life to that young man. So too, we as a Church are instruments to bring the project of Salvation to many.

Conclusion of Acts 20:9-12

Result: Life

Sadness was turned into joy! It was confirmed that God was truly among them, only God can give life. Hallelujah!

Everyone could now return to the moment of communion, Eutychus was no longer dead. This operation is still present today, there is a faithful church that watches over the word of truth.
