The guidance of the Holy Spirit – Preaching
Preaching Outline in Acts 8:29: “And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and join the chariot.”
Introduction to Acts 8:29
In Acts 8, we find the account of the journey of Philip, one of the seven deacons chosen by the early church, to Samaria, where he preached the gospel and performed miracles. After a revival in that region, an angel of the Lord instructed him to go into the desert, on the road down from Jerusalem to Gaza. It is in this context that the story of Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch unfolds.
The eunuch, a high-ranking official of the queen of Ethiopia, was returning home after a visit to Jerusalem, where he had gone to worship God. While traveling in his car, he was reading the book of the prophet Isaiah, but he couldn’t understand the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit then entered the scene and guided Philip to approach the eunuch’s chariot.
This episode reveals to us the importance of the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our lives. Just as he guided Philip, the Holy Spirit wants to lead us, guide us and enable us to carry out God’s will. He directs us to the right people, at the right times, so that we can be His instruments to carry the message of the gospel.
The story of Philip and the eunuch teaches us to be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. He speaks to us in different ways: through Bible reading, prayer, intuition, wise counsel and even circumstances that lead us to certain places or people. We need to be attentive and willing to obey His voice.

Parallel to today:
In a world that is increasingly hectic and full of distractions, it is essential that we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all areas of our lives. He wants to guide us in our decisions, relationships, work and ministry.
Just as he guided Philip in the desert, the Holy Spirit leads us through life’s challenges and uncertainties. He enables us to discern the right path, to make wise decisions and to live according to God’s will.
In times of crisis and confusion, the guidance of the Holy Spirit becomes even more crucial. He comforts us, encourages us and gives us hope. He reminds us that we are not alone and that God is in control of all things.
Conclusion of Acts 8:29
May we be like Philip, sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and ready to obey His direction. May He guide us in every step we take, enable us to carry out His work and lead us to the full life He has for us.
May the story of Philip and the eunuch inspire us to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit at all times, trusting that he will lead us in the paths of justice and truth.
