Love of God – Preaching
Preaching Outline on Ephesians 3:17-19 – “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses all understanding, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Introduction to Ephesians 3:17-19
When we talk about Jesus’ love for us, something extraordinary happens. When he dwells in our hearts through faith, we begin to perceive dimensions of this love that go beyond human reason. The apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, describes this love as something unfathomable, with measures that transcend our understanding: width, length, height and depth. Today, we want to explore these four dimensions of God’s love and understand how they impact our spiritual life and our walk with Christ.
Development
Width – A love that embraces all
The breadth of God’s love is impressive because it excludes no one. It is a universal love that embraces all people, without distinction of race, culture or social status. Jesus clearly said: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
God’s love is broad, it goes beyond our personal experiences and reaches out to the whole world. It is not limited to one nation, group or religion. God wants to use each one of us to spread this love wherever we are. When we understand this dimension, we are motivated to be channels of this grace, bringing hope and salvation to others.
Think about it: if God loved us first, even when we were sinners (Romans 5:8), who are we to judge or exclude anyone? His love is so vast that he invites us to love too.
Length – A love that lasts forever
The length of God’s love represents its eternity. It has no beginning and no end. Since before the creation of the world, God has loved us and planned our redemption (Ephesians 1:4). And this love will continue for all eternity, for He has promised to be with us “always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
Furthermore, God is patient with us. Peter reminds us that he does not want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). This constant love teaches us that God never gives up on us, even in our moments of weakness.
God’s love is extensive, spanning the length of our lives and sustaining us every step of the way. He enables us to face the daily challenges, knowing that we are standing firm in His saving grace.
Altura – A love that raises our hopes
The height of God’s love takes us to heavenly heights. It was there that Jesus came down to rescue us, leaving His glory in heaven and becoming man to die for us. As Philippians 2:6-8 says, He humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross, demonstrating the greatest act of love ever performed.
But this love doesn’t stop there. Jesus has promised to come back to take us to Him (John 14:1-3). He has prepared a place for us in the Father’s house, where we will live eternally in his presence. This is the pinnacle of divine love: He not only saves us, but also raises us to heavenly glory.
God’s love is high, reaching the highest aspirations of our soul. He calls us to live in holiness, seeking the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1). May we fix our eyes on Him and walk in obedience, reflecting His majesty here on earth.
Depth – A love that touches the depths
The depth of God’s love is revealed on the cross. There, Jesus endured unspeakable suffering to pay for our sins. He took upon himself all the guilt, pain and separation that we deserved (1 Peter 2:24).
This love touches the depths of our being, reaching even our darkest moments. No matter how far we have fallen or how far we are from God, His love finds us in the darkness and brings us into the light. He frees us from the guilt and power of sin, restoring us completely.
God’s love is deep, capable of healing our emotional, spiritual and physical wounds. He teaches us to forgive, to love unconditionally and to share His grace with others.
Conclusion of Ephesians 3:17-19
When Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, we are enabled to experience God’s love in its four dimensions: width, length, height and depth. This love is unfathomable, surpassing any human limit. It fills us with the fullness of God, transforming our lives and enabling us to live for His glory.
There is no greater love than God’s love for us. He wants us to know and experience this love in its entirety, even if we can’t fully understand it. When we allow this love to flow through us, we are used by God to bless other people and fulfill His mission in this world.
So let’s breathe, sing, walk and live this wonderful love! God proved His love for us by sending Jesus to die on the cross while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). May our response be one of gratitude, adoration and obedience, reflecting His love to everyone around us.
May the Lord help us to live full of His love, manifesting His fullness in every area of our lives. Amen!
“Jesus loves us.”
