Apocalipse versiculo por versiculo

Joy: The wine that heals the soul

Preaching Outline on I Timothy 5:23 – “Do not continue to drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent illnesses.”

Introduction to I Timothy 5:23

The apostle Paul, with his vast ministerial experience, advises young Timothy on how to conduct his life and ministry. Amidst the practical advice, we find this peculiar recommendation: “use a little wine”. Although at first glance it seems like a literal suggestion, a deeper analysis reveals a crucial spiritual meaning for all God’s servants.

Development

  • Water and Wine: Symbols of a Vital Balance: Water, an essential element for life, represents the sobriety, discipline and purity that should characterize the servant of God. However, water alone is not enough. Wine, in its right measure, symbolizes joy, enthusiasm and the celebration of life in God.
  • Joy: Medicine for the Sick Soul: We often meet dedicated servants of God, but they convey an image of sadness and heaviness. They seem to carry the burden of ministry without experiencing the true joy that comes from the Holy Spirit. The lack of this joy can be a sign of a sick soul, in need of healing and deliverance.
  • “A Little Wine”: Balanced and Contagious Joy: Paul recommends the moderate use of wine, warning against excess. In the same way, the servant’s joy must be genuine, balanced and free from scandal. It is a joy that overflows from the heart and infects everyone around, bearing witness to God’s grace and love.
  • Serve with Joy: A Commandment and a Necessity: Psalm 100 exhorts us to serve the Lord with joy. This joy is not a mere accessory, but an essential component of Christian life. It strengthens us, drives us and makes us effective witnesses to the Gospel.
  • Joy: Health for the Body and the Church: Lack of joy can affect not only spiritual health, but also physical health. A joyful heart is like good medicine, while sadness can make us sick. In the church, the genuine joy of the servants contributes to a healthy, welcoming environment conducive to spiritual growth.

Conclusion

The joy of God’s servant is different from the superficial joy of the world. It is deep, lasting and based on the certainty of salvation and communion with God. It is a joy that enables us to face difficulties, persevere in faith and infect the world with the hope of the Gospel. May we, as God’s servants, drink of the wine of joy and overflow this joy in our lives and ministries!
