Come to me quickly – Preaching

Preaching Outline on II TIMOTHY 4:6-9 – For I am already being offered by sprinkling of sacrifice, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. From now on, the crown of righteousness is laid up for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that Day; and not to me only, but also to all who love his coming.

Development

V. 7 – “I have fought the good fight…”

Paul sees that his death is imminent, a matter of time, but he considers that he has fought the only fight that is really worth it. He fought against the enemy, against religious errors, against other religions, against false teachers, against the corruption of the gospel, against sin, etc., and was victorious in Christ Jesus.

“I’ve finished my career…”

He struggled through difficulties, trials and temptations, but remained faithful to the Lord until the end.

“I have kept the faith.”

Despite suffering persecution and being abandoned by his friends, Paul didn’t deviate from the truth of the gospel that had been passed on to him.

V. 8 – “…the crown of righteousness is laid up for me…”

Because of his faithfulness to the Lord, Paul knew that his reward awaited him in heaven. In Revelation the Lord says: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life”. This is the promise we trust in, that one day we will receive from the Lord something incomparably better than what we have in this world. The promise was not only for the disciples, but “also to all who love his coming”. The Lord has this blessing for you too!

V. 9 – “Come to me quickly.”

But what does it take to achieve this privilege? Today the Lord has spoken to you: My son, come to me quickly. My arms are open to receive you.

The Lord is in a hurry to carry out his redemptive work, because Jesus’ return is drawing near (Watch and pray…). Today is a day of salvation, and so the Lord invites you to open your heart and accept Jesus’ sacrifice in your life. Jesus died for you and me, and he can fill your heart with a joy that the world cannot give you because it doesn’t know the Savior.

But we must come quickly, while the door of grace is open…; there is still time for salvation. In verse 21 Paul warns us: “Try to come before the winter…”. God’s word tells us that at the end of time love will grow cold in almost everyone; it’s the spiritual winter we’ve seen in our day, where people within a family have risen up against each other, parents against children, brothers against brothers.

Try to get to me quickly.
