Jesus cannot be hidden
Preaching Outline on Mark 7:24 – And he arose from there and went into the territory of Tyre and Sidon. When he entered a house, he wanted no one to know, but he could not hide himself,
Introduction to Mark 7:24
This chapter contains a message and two miracles. The message was addressed to the Pharisees about the outward signs of religiosity, while inwardly there was impurity. The first miracle was the healing of the Syro-Phoenician woman’s daughter, and the second was the opening of a deaf man’s ears. All this provoked a response which is recorded in verse 37: “And they were amazed, saying, ‘He has done all things well; he makes the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak. Our Lord has done all things well.
- Your Creation Was Done Well.
- Your Salvation Has Been Done Well.
- Your Revelation Was Done Well.
Deed:
No wonder the Scriptures say of him: “He could not be hidden.” After his message to the scribes and Pharisees, he turned away from them and went to the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered a house to escape the crowd, but the Word says: “He could not be hidden.” Since his entry into the world, his life could never be hidden.
When he was born, no one could hide it.
On the night Jesus was born, God placed a special star over Bethlehem, and a group of angels announced the event to humble shepherds in the hills of Judah. A heavenly choir began to sing: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.”
At his presentation, no one could hide it.
When the days were fulfilled, Mary brought Jesus to the temple to present him to the Lord, as the Law of Moses commanded. In the temple there was an old man called Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die before seeing the Lord’s Christ. When Simeon saw Jesus, he took him in his arms, blessed God and said: “Lord, now you send your servant away in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation.”
At his baptism, no one could hide him.
John had preached about the one who was to come after him, whose sandals he was not worthy to untie, and on the day Jesus appeared, John raised his hand and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” When John baptized Jesus, the heavens opened and the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove, and a voice said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
In his earthly ministry, no one could hide it.
Jesus was often tired and exhausted. He tried to move away to rest, but he couldn’t hide. Our text reveals this: “He could not be hidden.”
At his crucifixion, no one could hide him.
Although the world denied that he was Lord, all creation revealed that he was the Son of God. The sun refused to shine, the moon gave no light. The earth shook and the rocks split. He was lifted up, openly, publicly between heaven and earth.
At his burial, no one could hide him.
They put his body in a borrowed tomb and sealed the entrance with a large stone. The Roman soldiers tried to hide him forever. They put the Roman seal on the door, but when the time came for the Scriptures to be fulfilled, he was resurrected. Neither death, nor hell, nor the tomb could hide him.
Three things:
I want to share three truths about our Lord today, based on this scripture: “No one could hide him.”
I. Jeremiah 29:13 – HE CANNOT BE HIDDEN BY THOSE WHO SEEK HIM
A. When your soul grows weary and your heart grows heavy, and you begin to seek the Lord, he will not hide from you. You can find him when you seek him. Illustration: Jesus is always waiting for you to take the first step, and when you open the door of your heart, he is ready to enter.
B. Every Christian has faced moments when they thought they couldn’t go on, but on the cross they found Jesus. It was on the cross that we first saw the light. It was on the cross that the burdens of our hearts were lifted. He didn’t hide on the day of salvation!
C. Every believer who seeks him will find him – Hebrews 13:5.
II. Acts 4:13 – HE CANNOT BE HIDDEN IN THOSE WHO FIND HIM
A. Salvation is like measles, it manifests itself all over the body. Illustration: Salvation changes the way a person looks, speaks, acts and even smells. (Illustration: Salvation changes you – 2 Corinthians 5:17!)
B. When a person is saved, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in their life, and the world realizes that they have been with Jesus (Illustration: You can’t hide Jesus when he’s inside you – John 14:16).
C. Who would want to hide Jesus anyway?
III. Revelation 1:7 – HE CANNOT BE HIDDEN FROM THOSE WHO REJECT HIM
A. A sinner can go through this life indifferent, never seeking the Lord, never finding him and never caring; but the time will come when even the unbeliever will see him. Then he will bow before him and recognize that he is the Lord. Illustration: Paul said in Philippians 2:9-11, that God has given his Son a name, and one day “every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.”
B. For the unbeliever it will be too late. There will be no hiding on that day!
C. Illustration: Satan will get what he deserves – Revelation 20:10.
Conclusion of Mark 7:24
Thank God for a Savior who cannot be hidden. (Illustration: The children’s game of hide and seek.) Isn’t it wonderful that you don’t have to play hide and seek with God? He’s not hiding, he’s waiting with open arms to receive you and all your problems. If you need him, you can find him today – Proverbs 8:17.
