God’s table – Preaching

Preaching Outline on Luke 14:15 – When one of those at the table heard this, he said to him: Blessed is he who eats bread in the kingdom of God.

Introduction to Luke 14:15

The text above tells us about a dinner that Jesus was attending. It tells us that he entered the house of a Pharisee to eat bread with him. While they were at the table, Jesus spoke about the Kingdom of God, bringing great comfort to those present, as they listened attentively.

Development

Communion

The communion at that table was so great, the learning with the Lord Jesus so wonderful, the comfort they felt from having Jesus present was so gentle, that one of those present exclaimed these words: “… blessed is he who eats bread in the kingdom of God…” In fact, when he said these words, he was imagining what it would be like to sit at the table that God has prepared for man (the eternal table).

God has a table prepared for man. It is the Lord’s Supper. At this table the food is to supply man’s greatest need, which is the need of the soul. The soul hungers and thirsts for God. It only rejoices when it can sit at this table.

Bread

The bread presented in the kingdom of God is something different from everything that man is used to, which is the bread of the kingdom of this world (material bread). It feeds only the belly, it feeds only material needs (reasons) which are as perishable as man, because everything material, everything earthly, all of this is fleeting; these things last only for a period of time. The earth itself, too, has its time counted.

The Bread of the Kingdom of God is different because it speaks of Jesus. He is the bread of life. Whoever feeds on this bread has eternal life. This bread is the word of God, which strengthens man to overcome the challenges of life. By feeding on the word of God we receive the strength to fight and be victorious in all the things that come into our hearts.

John 6:32-35 – Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who came down from heaven and gives life to the world. They said, “Lord, always give us this bread!” Then Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never hunger; he who believes in me will never thirst.

Conclusion of Luke 14:15

To be blessed is to be happy

If you feed on this bread, which is Jesus, sadness will never invade your heart, because Jesus will always be by your side, lifting you up and showing you a better future.
