Preaching Outline on Luke 10:25-29 – And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
And he said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?
And he answered and said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
And he said to him: You have answered well; do this, and you will live.
But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?
Introduction to Luke 10:25-29
- Doctor of the law – man with knowledge of the “Bible”, religious
- I didn’t know how to achieve eternal life
- Knowledge of the Bible does not guarantee eternal life
Development
- Eternal life is everything that God envisioned for man, but man himself hasn’t woken up to it yet;
- Many people know the law (ten commandments) but they don’t know anything about eternal life:
-“What is written?” – Historical Jesus
-“How do you read?” – Personal interpretation. Prophetic Jesus.
- “Do this” – practice it and you will inherit eternal life
- Practice what?
- love for God
- love of neighbor
- “Who is my neighbor?” – the Doctor of the Law “knew” God. He just didn’t know who his neighbor was. This is the great problem of the world: not knowing your neighbor and therefore not loving them.
- To explain who his neighbor was, Jesus uses figures very familiar to the doctors of the Law, such as the priest and the Levite.
- The priest was not the neighbor (he typified Religion)
- The Levite was not the neighbor (he typified the Law)
- The Samaritan is the neighbor. Anyone who needs help.
Conclusion
- Who is your neighbor? – is the one who is close, who helps, who gave his life for us.
- Go and do it the same way:
- Recognize Jesus
- Love Jesus and everyone as he loved himself.
