The mysteries of eternity
Preaching Outline on Romans 11:33 – “O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways!” (Romans 11:33, NIV).
Development
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in eternity before the infinite wisdom of God? What would it be like to understand the mysteries that today are unattainable to the human mind?
When we get to heaven, it won’t be necessary to worry about asking questions like: “Paul, what was the thorn in the flesh that pained you so much?” or “Jesus, what exactly did you write on earth when you confronted the sinful woman and those who wanted to stone her?”.
We will be faced with full knowledge, as the Word says: “Now we see only a dim reflection, as in a mirror; but then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I will know fully, just as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12, NIV).
Although God’s mysteries are eternal and inexhaustible, he has already revealed enough to us so that we can believe and trust in him.
Imagine that even after living 850 million years in eternity, we still won’t fully understand the mind of God.
“Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you penetrate the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens; what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol; what can you know? Their length is greater than the earth, and their breadth is greater than the sea” (Job 11:7-9, NIV).
Eternity will not be about exhausting the knowledge of God, but about living in the infinite wonder of who He is. Every moment will be filled with the experience of His glory, love and perfection, which never cease.
What we know of God today, through His Word and the revelation of His Son Jesus, is more than enough for us to believe that He is the one true God, the Creator of all things.
As it is written: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen and understood through created things” (Romans 1:20, NIV).
God is sovereign, and nothing is out of his control.
His omniscience is beyond our comprehension: “Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes” (Hebrews 4:13).
For him, there is no past, present or future – everything is in eternity, where he reigns with full authority.
In our limitations, we are unable to unravel his ways or fully understand his purposes.
But in His goodness, He grants us a faith that comes from eternity, so that we can believe in what He has revealed to us.
As it is written: “This faith and knowledge is based on the hope of eternal life, which the God who does not lie promised before eternal times; and in due time he brought his word to light” (Titus 1:2-3, NIV).
A practical example of this is how we often try to understand the challenges we face.
We often ask ourselves: “Why, Lord?” or “What is the purpose of this?”.
But God, in his wisdom, calls us to trust in him. His ways may be unfathomable, but His grace is visible and palpable, especially through Jesus Christ.
As it says in 1 Peter 1:19, we were redeemed “with the precious blood of a Lamb without blemish or defect”.
As much as God’s plans are beyond our comprehension, we can rest in the certainty that, at the right time, all will be revealed. The eternal God, who has existed since before the beginning of time, chose to come down to earth and manifest His love through Jesus Christ.
Imagine for a moment a life completely surrendered to this love. A love that reached us when we were lost and brought us back to God. This same God, with His infinite wisdom and love, has mapped out the best path for each of us. We don’t need to understand everything; we just need to trust.
So may we live each day with the certainty that God is in control, guiding us with his wisdom and goodness.
To him be all the glory, honor and praise, now and forever.
May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
