Introduction to Luke:41-43 The verses of Luke 22:41-43 take us back to one of the most intense moments in Jesus' life: the prayer in Gethsemane. In this scene, Jesus faces the anguish and agony of the cross, revealing a profound human and, at the same time, divine facet. Jesus freely chose to suffer and die on the cross out of love for humanity, doing all the Father's will. The Father: The owner of everything "If you will": God's sovereignty; "not my will but yours be done": Submission: The phrase "not my will but yours be done" demonstrates the perfect harmony between the will of Jesus and the will of God. The Chalice: Jesus' sacrifice; Jesus knew how much he would suffer, and how much pain he would endure before and during the crucifixion, here he showed his human condition once again, fearing what was to come. However, it was necessary for the Father's will to be fulfilled and the project of Salvation to reach our lives. The reward: An angel comforted him (vs.43). Divine comfort: Even in the most difficult times, we can count on God's comfort and strength, and so the Lord Jesus received proper care. Conclusion of Luke 22:41-43 The account of Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane is an invitation for us to approach God in our moments of anguish and seek his strength and direction. By contemplating Jesus' submission to the Father's will, we are inspired to do the same in our own lives. God's will is to save man.
