So Mary chose the good part - Preaching Preaching Outline on Luke 10:38-42 - "Mary therefore chose the good part, and it will not be taken away from her." Theme: Full trust in the Lord Aim of the message: To remind the Church that our choice to rest will be at the feet of Jesus. Introduction to Luke 10:38-42 The story we read in the Word shows us two situations, two conditions living in the same house, the situation of Martha and that of Mary. Two different behaviors. What does the Lord want to teach us with this example? Development v.38 - Jesus entered the village, Jesus was born and came into the world to enter the house of man. v.38 - Martha hosts - it was Martha who welcomed Jesus into her home. In conversion, often in search of a solution, to solve a need, we welcome Jesus, for a short time, just enough to help us with my tasks, then Jesus can leave, he can go away. He wanted to put his house in order (just a job, just pass the exam, just money, pass the entrance exam and that's it). v.39 - His sister, called Mary, fell down at Jesus' feet, listening to his teachings. But Mary chose to be at Jesus' feet, it was a place of rest, the teachings (the revelations) make man rest ("my servant, my handmaid, I'm going to save your family, I'm going to open a door to employment, I'm going to give you victory, I'm going to heal you, I'm going to set you free, I'm going to give you joy. Mary chose to know God's plans for her life. v.40 - They both had Jesus at home, but they used him differently; Mary used him better. Martha - Agitated (from side to side) without direction in life, she didn't seek to know God's prophetic plan. Busy in many services - Busy, no time to listen to Jesus, can't pray, go to services, busy, many services (is it worth it?), studies, work, professional life, pot to clean, shirt to iron, food to cook. Alone - she wasn't with Jesus. "Command him to come and help me" - She only wanted Jesus to solve her material problems, her private plans. Jesus showed her how she was doing: Restless - anxious, not resting, agitated, without peace; Distracted - She didn't notice the promises, the prophecies, the moment, Jesus wanted to speak and she was distracted. Worried - What about tomorrow? What about the future? What about my children? Husband? Wife? Vestibular? The uncertainties, so much effort, so much work, but I was still worried, "Without me you can do nothing". Conclusion Mary chose the good part, to be with Jesus, to listen to his voice, to pray, she decided not to give preference to the many services. "IT WILL NOT BE TAKEN FROM YOU" - One day death will take everything from us: possessions, courses, money, car, house, family, doctorate, books, friends, children. But the Word of God is eternal, it will not be taken away from us, death will not take us away from Jesus. Mary understood that to put her house in order she had to start by taking care of her spiritual needs, she only needed one thing: JESUS. We only need one thing: we only need Jesus. To be with Jesus.
